CANCELED DUE TO WINTER STORM WARNING

Biotechnology has given us a whole new toolbox for tinkering with life, and we have the power to modify animals in profound new ways. Scientists have already created all sorts of strange creatures, including glow-in-the-dark monkeys, clones cats, bionic dogs, and cyborg beetles. In this talk, journalist Emily Anthes (author of the new book, Frankenstein’s Cat)takes us from petri dish to pet store as she explores how and why scientists are re-engineering animals and the ethical implications of our new scientific superpowers.

Emily Anthes is a science journalist and author. Her work has appeared in The New York Times, The New Yorker, The Atlantic, Wired, Nature, and elsewhere. Her book, Frankenstein’s Cat: Cuddling Up to Biotech’s Brave New Beasts, was published in March 2013 by Scientific American/Farrar, Straus and Giroux. Emily is also the author of the Instant Egghead Guide: The Mind (St. Martin’s Press, 2009). Emily has a master’s degree in science writing from MIT and a bachelor’s degree in the history of science and medicine from Yale, where she also studied creative writing.
